TONHALLE ZUERICH

Orchestera
The Tonhalle, which was built in 1895 and inaugurated in the presence of Johannes Brahms, is located in the same building as the Kongresshaus. The concert hall's excellent acoustics rank amongst the best in the world. The larger concert hall seats 1,455. The first-class concert program is highly varied.

Ever since 1999, when the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich was awarded the German Record Critic’s Award for its seminal recording of all Beethoven’s symphonies, and if not before, the oldest symphony orchestra in Switzerland has been the focus of international interest. Since then, well over a million Beethoven CDs have been sold.

The orchestra was established in 1868 and soon played a leading role in the musical life of German-speaking Switzerland, particularly after 1895, when the new Tonhalle, one of the world’s best concert halls in terms of acoustics, was opened. Famous chief conductors were to have a decisive influence on the Tonhalle Orchestra, including Volkmar Andreae, Hans Rosbaud, Rudolf Kempe, Gerd Albrecht and Christoph Eschenbach. And the list of regular guest conductors is as illustrious as it is long: Karl Böhm, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Rafael Kubelik, Carl Schuricht and Bruno Walter; more recently, Frans Brüggen, Charles Dutoit, Bernard Haitink, Marek Janowski, Mariss Jansons, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Wolfgang Sawallisch.

Today the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich consists of just over 100 musicians and gives almost 100 concerts per season featuring about 50 different programmes. Guest performances in Switzerland, growing numbers of concert tours in the international musical centres of the Old and New Worlds, and above all numerous CD recordings, including seven CDs of orchestral works by Richard Strauss and a recording of all the Schumann symphonies, have confirmed the orchestra’s excellent reputation with audiences and critics alike.
