In 2019 the Salzburg Festival wants to kindle the interest of the audience and curiosity in myths from antiquity, which the Festival c-founder Hugo von Hofmannsthal saw as a “magic mirror”. Mythical tales from long ago still raise ever-relevant questions about human existence, addressing themes of war, flight, sacrifice, revenge, guilt and atonement.

The opening premiere will be Mozart’s IDOMENEO. Here, the ruler – torn between duty to the gods and love for his family – is forced to deliberate and take action. Other operas include: MÉDÈE / L.Cherubini, ALCINA / G.F. Händel, CEDIPE / G. Enescu, ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS / Jacques Offenbach, SIMON BOCCANEGRA / G. Verdi, SALOME / R. Straus and concertant ADRIANA LECOUVREUR / F. Cilea and LUISE MILLER / G. Verdi.

In the field of drama apart of the traditional JEDERMANN / H. v. Hofmannsthal the pieces YOUTH WITHOUT GOD / Ö. v. Horváth, the SUMMER GUESTS / Maxim Gorki, LILIOM / Ferenc Molnár and DIE EMPÖRTEN / T. Walser will be staged this year.
The concert program includes orchestral concerts (SWR Symphony Orchestra, Syphonieorchester des Bayr. Rundfungs, ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Gustaf Mahler Youth Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig), Mozart Matinees, Chamber Concerts, Soloist Concerts and Lieder Evenings.

Works by W. A. Mozart will be performed as part of the traditional Mozart Matinees (Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg), chamber concerts and soloist concerts. The Camerata Salzburg will perform Mozart's C minor Mass K. 427 on August 5 under the direction of Andrew Manze.

The complete program with all operas, plays and concerts can be explored on the web portal of the Salzburg Festival .
